Conway surmises, correctly, that the High Lama is actually that Catholic priest who founded the city, and he is now 250 years old. Once they leave, however, their aging greatly speeds back up, and they soon die. People have come and joined since then, and when they do, their aging slows down. Conway learns that Perrault, a Catholic monk from Luxembourg, built the lamasery early in the eighteenth century. Conway is given an audience with the High Lama, a tremendous honor. Mallinson falls in love with her, as does Conway. Lo-Tsen, a seemingly young Manchu woman, is also a postulant at the lamasery. Conway is attracted to a life of scholarship the city promises. Barnard wants to stay because he is actually a stock fraudster named Chalmers Bryant, on the run from authorities, and he wants to establish a gold mine in the area. Miss Brinklow wants to teach the inhabitants about sin. The others decide to stay, and they each find a purpose for themselves in the lamasery. Mallinson suggests they hire some help and leave, but Chang dissuades him of that idea. It sits in the shadow of Karakal, a giant mountain. They arrive at the lamasery and find that it has many modern conveniences. Though the location of the city is not made clear, Conway believes he knows where it might be.Ĭhang, who also speaks English, leads them to a lamasery where he is a postulant. The plane crashes, and before the pilot dies, he tells the passengers to seek shelter in Shangri-La. However, the plane is hijacked, and instead of heading to Peshawar, it is flown over the mountains to Tibet. The passengers are: Conway the young vice-consul Mallinson Barnard, who is from the United States and Miss Brinklow, a British missionary.

This remembrance is the majority of the novel. For a brief period, however, Conway had recovered from his memory loss and shared his story with Rutherford, before his memory slipped away once again. As the dinner unfolds, Rutherford tells the neurologist that he had seen Conway in a French mission hospital in Chung-Kiang, China, showing signs of amnesia. They begin discussing Hugh Conway, a British consul in Afghanistan who has gone missing under unusual circumstances. He and a novelist friend of his, Rutherford, attend a dinner in Berlin being hosted by another friend, Wyland, a secretary at the British embassy. The prologue-and later, the epilogue-of James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon are narrated by a neurologist.
